Firefighters who've searched a building after an explosion in Wellington this afternoon confirm no-one's missing or been injured.

The incident at Taylor Preston meat works near the Ngauranga Gorge happened at 12:30.

Fire Chief Steve Mackle says fire crews will remain at the scene for a while yet.

"There has been an explosion in the rendering plant at Taylor Preston. There's no casualties, no one's been injured, there's damage to part of the building."

Firefighters were investigating what caused the blast.

Witness Emjay Dette said she didn't hear a bang but saw ``big puffs of smoke'' billowing out of the building.

Steve Mackle says with the exception of the rendering area, the plant is able to operate again.
