Meatworker crushed in knocking box

November 12, 2010

A worker is fighting for his life after being crushed in the knocking box at Tabro Meats this morning. He was found by his fellow workers at about 5.30am.

We understand tthat he was cleaning the ‘‘knocking box’’ when the hydraulic sides were activated, crushing him.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it appeared he had been "caught or crushed in the machine" and was found some time later. It was not known how long he had been trapped before he was discovered.

The advanced life support paramedic said the man "suffered significant chest injuries including collapsed lungs in the accident".

"A procedure was performed where large needles were inserted into either side of his chest to clear any trapped air ... we were able to reinflate his lungs," Mr Slattery said.

"The men were doing cardio pulmonary resuscitation but the man wasn't getting adequate oxygen supply.

"We put a breathing tube in to his airway. We also put a drip into his arm so we could give him drugs to stimulate his heart and we were able to get it back into a normal rhythm."

The man was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.
