Codes of Practice released for comment

In July 2008, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) formally committed to
harmonising the occupational health and safety laws in Australia by signing the
Intergovernmental Agreement for Regulatory and Operational Reform in Occupational
Health and Safety (IGA).

The model WHS laws consist of:

  • The model WHS Act
  • Model WHS Regulations – which were endorsed in principle by WRMC on 10 August 2011, and
  • Model Codes of Practice – the first 11 codes were endorsed in principle at the same time as the model WHS Regulations.

The Codes that have already been endorsed in principle by the Workplace Relations Ministers are:

  • How to Manage Work Health and Safety Risks
  • Work Health and Safety Consultation, Cooperation and Coordination
  • Managing the Work Environment and Facilities
  • Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work
  • Confined Spaces
  • Hazardous Manual Tasks
  • How to Prevent Falls at Workplaces
  • How to Manage and Control Asbestos in the Workplace
  • How to Safely Remove Asbestos
  • Preparation of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for Hazardous Chemicals
  • Labelling of Workplace Hazardous Chemicals

Further draft Codes of Practice were released for public comment on 26 September 2011. The closing date for the following draft model Codes of Practice is Friday, 18 November
