Butcher loses hand in mincer

A young butcher has had a hand partially amputated after it was caught in a mincer. The 21-year-old had his left hand drawn into a meat mincer while he was cleaning it about 11am on Thursday 16 August 2012.

Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Susannah Wilson said that the man was taken to the Alfred Hospital.

A WorkSafe investigator and inspector are at the Brighton business and WorkSafe spokeswoman Rosanna Bonaccurso said investigators were determining the cause and would speak to the butcher.

The man lost parts of his four fingers and his hand was amputated on site.

"We encourage workers and employers to identify hazards, assess the risks and fix the problems before it's too late," Ms Bonaccurso said.
