Working in heat can be unpleasant, can lead to illness, and under extreme circumstances can be fatal. People may be at risk of heat illness when:

  • working in industries where heat is generated (foundries, bakeries or abattoirs)
  • doing work involving significant physical activity during hot weather

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 employers are required to provide and maintain, as far as is reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risks to health. This includes situations where employees may be at risk of heat illness.
